Built Vessels with Stuart Kent
  • Thursday October  8th
  • Hybrid: Live at NCSU Crafts Center and by IRD Broadcast via Zoom
  • Zoom call opens a 6:15 for socializing
  • Meeting begins at 6:45 PM
  • Demonstration begins at 7 PM

Please join us October 8th for returning demonstrator Stuart Kent, Director of the North Carolina Furniture School.

Stuart will be demonstrating what he calls  "Built" Vessels, which are simply an assembly of individually turned components.

Stuart notes that in his work the components typically consist of spindle and face turnings. He frequently incorporates components from different materials like burl or solid hardwood as well as through a multiplicity of construction including: laminating, segmenting, bricklaying, and coopered stave construction.

In some cases Stuart will embellish finished turnings with a painted frieze, or with carvings, inlay, or cast bronze ormolu. These embellishments can be purely decorative or can be used to tell as story as typified by vessels from antiquity.

While the "Built" Vessel tends to be complex in finished form, it is simply a sum of parts created with intermediate turning and woodworking skills. Stuart likes to turn with a simple tool set consisting of: a large and small Irish-ground bowl gouge, a parting tool, and a square scraper or carbide tool.  Additional tools can of course be included, but this is the basic kit he reachs for first and most frequently.

As far as sharpening is concerned, Stuart likes sharpen with a slow speed 8” grinder, friable wheels or CBN, and a Oneway Wolverine system with the Vari-grind jig.

The aim of this demonstration is to help woodturners, of varying skill levels, advance their work through careful technical skill with primary focus on design with intention and finished aesthetics.

2026/09 - Show & Tell

Please join us for the October Show and Tell Session

Thanks to all who joined the September Show & Tell session!  A great evening with lots of fun conversation.

We like to remind everyone that the Show & Tell sessions are intended for all levels of woodturners and designed to be a safe and respectful place to solicit supportive input and advice, regardless of a woodturners experience level. It’s an opportunity for turners to engage in an informal and beneficial exchange of ideas and to foster further growth in woodturning.

All WGNC members and their guests are welcome to spend an evening with fellow woodturners as we explore and share members projects, ideas, issues and yes, even those shop disasters.

Please also keep in mind, you do not have to have a completed project to participate.  These sessions are designed for the exploration of ideas, techniques, problems, designs and any other subjects pertaining to your woodturning experience.  So, whether you have a completed piece, a practice piece, "idea boards", or something that challenges you,  all are welcome for sharing and discussing with other members.  If you don't have anything mentioned above, join us anyway.  We always have a lot of fun, you can meet folks and like most of us, you just might learn something or be inspired to try something new.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
